Baseball Recap: Briggs Comes Up Short

Briggs extended their losing streak to four on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 15-6 in the process. They came up short against the Westland Cougars, falling 16-1. If the Bruins were looking for revenge after losing 5-2 to the Cougars when the teams met back in April of 2017, then they'll just have to keep looking.

As for Westland, their win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 11-11. The result was nothing new for the Cougars, who have now won seven contests by seven runs or more so far this season.

For Westland's part, RJ Burke was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He struck out 11 batters over 4.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Burke has become a key player for Westland: the team is 2-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 9-10 otherwise. Burke was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with two runs. Those two runs gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Westland got a massive performance out of Carson Willis, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs, two stolen bases, and three RBI. Those three RBI gave Willis a new career-high. Aidan Moore was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs.

Briggs has already played their next matchup, a 13-0 defeat against Westerville South on the 23rd. As for Westland, they will square off against Pickerington North at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Cougars' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Panthers have averaged an impressive 7.3 runs per game this season.
