Basketball Recap: Savanna's Winning Streak Snapped at Six Games

After a string of six wins, Savanna's good fortune finally ran out on Friday. The matchup between them and the Rancho Alamitos Vaqueros didn't end well, with the Savanna Rebels falling 70-53. The Rebels were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Vaqueros apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in December of 2022.

When it comes to explaining why Savanna lost, don't look at Mathys Rudel. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double on 12 points and 13 boards. Another player making a difference was Paul Henderson, who posted 12 points and three steals.

Even though they lost, Savanna smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive rebounds. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 3.6 offensive boards per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 12.6.

Rancho Alamitos got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Inoke Malo out in front who went 6 of 13 on his way to 18 points along with eight rebounds and seven assists. What's more, Malo also racked up three blocks, the most he's had since back in November of 2023. Zion Chambers also deserves some recognition as he grabbed his first steal of the season.

Savanna's loss was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 3-1 and their overall record down to 13-7. As for Rancho Alamitos, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 9-15 record this season.

Savanna wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next match, an 84-61 win against Loara on the 18th. As for Rancho Alamitos, they will head out to challenge Los Amigos at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Los Amigos knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past three games -- so hopefully Rancho Alamitos likes a good challenge.
