Soccer Preview: Clinton vs. Cape Fear
The Clinton Dark Horses will head out to square off against the Cape Fear Colts at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
Clinton is probably headed into the contest with a chip on their shoulder considering C.B. Aycock just ended the team's nine-game winning streak on Monday. They took a 4-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Golden Falcons. Evan Gillespie was hit with a yellow card, which may have had some impact on her (and the team's) ability to make aggressive plays.
Arizona Tyndall and Samiya Smith scored both of Clinton's goals, bringing their combined season tally to six goals.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Cape Fear, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Friday. Their defense stepped up to hand South View a 7-0 shutout on Tuesday. Cape Fear might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matches by three goals or more this season.
Cape Fear has been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 11 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-4-2 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they scored 49 goals over those 11 contests. As for Clinton, their loss dropped their record down to 10-7-1.
Clinton came out on top in a nail-biter against Cape Fear in their previous meeting back in March of 2022, sneaking past 5-4. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Dark Horses since the squad won't have the home-pitch advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
