Jefferson and Northeast will have new football coaches.
The tenures of two prominent Bay area coaches have come to an end.
Jefferson (Tampa) football coach Mike Fenton recently stepped down, just months after leading the Dragons to their first state championship in school history.
Fenton, a 33-year veteran Bay area coach who spent the past five seasons as Jefferson's head man, led the Dragons to a 15-0 record and a 44-34 state title win against Miami Norland in December.
Fenton, 55, spent a total of 12 years at Jefferson, twice going to the state title game as the Dragons' offensive coordinator. Jefferson has not named a successor as of yet.
Meanwhile,
Plant (Tampa) head basketball coach Mike Phillips will not return next season.
Phillips was dismissed after this year's season ended, his 15th as head coach. The all-time winningest coach at the school, Phillips posted 250 wins and seven state playoff appearances.
According to the St. Petersburg Times, Phillips' dismissal comes amid an internal investigation into the school's athletic department. Phillips told the Times he could not comment ‘'per legal counsel.''
Also, for the first time in 32 years, an Austin won't be coaching football at
Northeast (St. Petersburg).
Head football coach Jay Austin has been let go by the school. Jay Austin coached the Vikings for the past four seasons after the retirement of his father Jerry Austin, who led the Vikings for 28 years.
Jay Austin went 20-22 in four seasons, reaching the postseason last year. During his tenure at Northeast, Jerry Austin won 196 games.
