Softball Recap: Castleberry Gets the Win

Castleberry hadn't done well against Bridgeport recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. Castleberry came out on top against Bridgeport by a score of 7-4. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 2-1 back in February.

Rand'Elle Conner spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and one unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up six Ks.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Cassandra Martinez, who scored four runs and stole four bases while going 4-for-4. Those four stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Alyssa Cardenas, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.

Castleberry was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .394. They are 3-1 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

The victory made it two in a row for Castleberry and bumps their season record up to 6-16-1. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to hits: they averaged an imposing ten hits in those games compared to only 5.38 in the others. As for Bridgeport, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost ten of their last 11 games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-14 record this season.

Coincidentally, Castleberry and Bridgeport will both be playing Decatur the next time they take the field. Bridgeport will host Decatur at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, while Castleberry will head out to face them at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
