Baseball Recap: Cocalico Takes a Loss

If Cocalico was feeling good fresh off their 9-0 takedown of Octorara Area on Wednesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Eagles lost 12-4 to the Solanco Golden Mules on Thursday. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Golden Mules this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 9-2 back in March.

Alex Fox put in work no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. What's more, he gave up only two walks, the fewest he's had since back in April. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. He is becoming a predictor of Cocalico's success: when he posts at least three hits the team is 2-1 (and 0-14 when he doesn't).

Fox wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Dane Horning, who went 1-for-4 with one stolen base. Nick McArdle also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.

Cocalico's defeat was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 2-15. As for Solanco, their win ended a four-game drought on the road and puts them at 10-8.

Coming up, Cocalico will square off against Garden Spot at 4:15 p.m. on Monday. The Spartans have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 6.53 runs per game on average), something the Eagles will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Solanco, they will face off against Conestoga Valley at 4:15 p.m. on Friday. The Golden Mules' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Buckskins have averaged an impressive 6.2 runs per game this season.
