Softball Recap: Carlsbad Comes Up Short

It's hard to turn regular season success into postseason wins, a fact Carlsbad can now relate to. They fell just short of the Mayfield Trojans by a score of 4-2 on Friday. The defeat continues a trend for the Cavemen/Cavegirls in their meetings with the Trojans: they've now lost six in a row.

Kalion Fuentes spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and two unearned) runs on five hits and racked up eight Ks.

On the hitting side, Carlsbad saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Allyson Madrid, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Carlsbad's loss dropped their record down to 21-7. As for Mayfield, they pushed their record up to 21-6 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Carlsbad will venture away from home to challenge Atrisco Heritage Academy at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday. The Cavemen/Cavegirls' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Jaguars have averaged an impressive 9.8 runs per game this season. As for Mayfield, they are taking a road trip to take on Centennial at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday. The Hawks will roll in looking for their 28th straight victory, something the Trojans surely won't give up without a fight.
