Basketball Game Preview: Sandia Matadors vs. Volcano Vista Hawks

Two dominant guards in Sydney Benally and Mila Espinoza are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Sandia Matadors will be playing at home against the Volcano Vista Hawks at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Sandia will be strutting in after a win while Volcano Vista will be coming in after a loss.

Sandia is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of New Mexico's top teams: Rio Rancho, who was ranked sixth at the time (Sandia was ranked first). Sandia came out on top against Rio Rancho by a score of 52-44 on Saturday. The 52-point effort marked the Matadors' lowest-scoring matchup of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.

Meanwhile, Volcano Vista was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They were two points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 36-34 heartbreaker at the hands of Cleveland. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Hawks have suffered since December 3, 2024.

Volcano Vista's defeat dropped their record down to 7-5. As for Sandia, their victory bumped their record up to 14-1.

Sandia didn't have too much breathing room in their game against Volcano Vista in their previous meeting back in March of 2024, but they still walked away with a 49-45 win.
