Baseball Recap: Wallkill Takes Down Cornwall Central in a Playoff Battle

With a playoff win on the line, Wallkill rose to the challenge on Sunday. They had just enough and edged out the Cornwall Central Dragons 2-1. The Panthers haven't had any issues with the Dragons recently, as the game was their third consecutive victory against them.

Ryan Mayer spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on six hits and racked up ten Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in ten consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Connor Bleichner was excellent, going 3-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Wallkill's success: when he posts at least three hits the team is undefeated (and 7-9 when he doesn't).

Wallkill's record now sits at 12-9. As for Cornwall Central, the loss snapped their winning streak at eight games and leaves them with a 13-7 record.

Looking ahead, Wallkill will take on Horseheads at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Blue Raiders' pitching crew has only allowed 1.6 runs per game this season, so the Panthers' hitters will have their work cut out for them. Cornwall Central does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
