Baseball Game Preview: Fisher Catholic Irish vs. Grove City Christian Eagles

The Fisher Catholic Irish are taking a road trip to take on the Grove City Christian Eagles at 5:15 p.m. on Monday.

The home team had come away the winner the last four times Fisher Catholic and Wellington School had met, but sadly for the fans who attended this one that wasn't the case. The Irish fell 9-4 to the Jaguars on Friday.

Meanwhile, Grove City Christian came tearing into Saturday's contest with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 10.8 runs), and they left with even more momentum. Everything went their way against the Lakers as they made off with a 16-1 victory. Considering the Eagles have won seven matches by more than five runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.

Cade Wachenschwanz made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. Wachenschwanz was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in two of his four plate appearances with two runs and one RBI. Those two runs gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jeff Collins, who went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Grove City Christian's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 6-7-1 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Lucas Langsdorf, who went 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI.

Grove City Christian was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .429. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .400 or higher in three consecutive games.

Grove City Christian pushed their record up to 10-7-1 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.3 runs over those games. As for Fisher Catholic, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-12.

Fisher Catholic couldn't quite get it done against Grove City Christian when the teams last played back in April as they fell 9-4. Can the Irish avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
