Softball Recap: Covina Wins Going Away Against San Gabriel

Covina waltzed into their contest on Saturday with two straight wins... but they left with three. Everything went their way against the San Gabriel Matadors as they made off with a 31-1 win. That 30 run margin sets a new team best for the Colts this season.

Jaylene Rodriguez made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Rodriguez was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 2-for-2. Those hits were her first of the season.

In other pitching news, Lexi Sumpter looked comfortable as she tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances.

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Savanna Pacheco, who fired off two home runs, six RBI, and four runs while going 2-for-5. The dominant performance gave her a new career-high in runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Sabrina Medrano, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3.

Covina always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .628. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Covina's victory bumped their record up to 4-1. As for San Gabriel, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-5.

Looking ahead, Covina will square off against Mountain View at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Mountain View has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 10.71 runs per game on average), something Covina will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for San Gabriel, they will challenge Marshall at 3:15 p.m. on Monday. San Gabriel has given up an average of 17.8 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.
