Softball Recap: Polytechnic Triumphs

Polytechnic proved they can win big on Friday (they won by six) and on Saturday they proved they can win the close ones too. They had just enough and edged out the Vasquez Mustangs 5-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Panthers have posted since March 14, 2024.

Ellery Engstrom spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned runs on five hits and racked up seven Ks.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Brynn Connolly, who scored two runs and stole three bases while going 3-for-3. That's the most hits she has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Eila Chan, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 2-for-3.

Polytechnic is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-3 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Vasquez, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 12-11.

Looking ahead, Polytechnic will face off against South Pasadena at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Tigers' pitching crew has only allowed 3.8 runs per game this season, so the Panthers' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Vasquez, they will welcome Faith Baptist at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday. The Contenders will aim to continue their four-game streak of scoring more runs each matchup than the last.
