The Abingdon Falcons will take on the Cave Spring Knights at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Abingdon is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They came out on top against Magna Vista by a score of 10-5.
Mariah Branscomb was incredible, going 1-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. The team also got some help courtesy of Brenna Green, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Meanwhile, Cave Spring came tearing into Saturday's match with eight straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7.4 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They never let the Blue Demons get on the board and left with a 12-0 victory. Give some credit to the fans of both teams: the last three times they've met, the home team has come away the winner.
Caitlyn Karnes made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out ten over five innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in April. She was also big at the plate, earning three runs.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Rachel Hartman, who went 2-for-3 with one home run and four RBI. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high. Madison Steffen was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.
Cave Spring's win was their ninth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 15-6. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.1 runs over those games. As for Abingdon, their win bumped their record up to 21-4.
Tuesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Abingdon hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .376. However, it's not like Cave Spring struggles in that department as they've averaged .371. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Abingdon came out on top in a nail-biter against Cave Spring in their previous meeting back in May of 2024, sneaking past 4-3. Do the Falcons have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Knights turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
