Basketball Recap: Avery County Vikings vs. Ashe County Huskies
Avery County extended their winning streak to three on Wednesday, bumping them up to 5-1. They enjoyed a cozy 75-60 victory over the Ashe County Huskies. That 15 point margin sets a new team best for the Vikings this season.

Avery County had a senior duo take command as Hank Johnson almost dropped a double-double with 26 points and nine boards and Oak Markland shot 59% from the field en route to 25 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Markland has scored all season. Max Milliron was another key player, putting up four points and 11 rebounds.
Avery County smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 12 offensive boards in three consecutive matchups.
As for Ashe County, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 1-3. The loss was just more heartbreak for they who fell 62-60 when the teams previously met back in December of 2024.
Several Huskies players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Cole Treva, who went 7-for-10 on his way to 18 points along with five boards and three blocks. Thanks to that strong game, Treva now owns an excellent 53.8% shooting accuracy. The team also got some help courtesy of Jordan Tibbs, who shot 67% from the field to rack up 13 points.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Avery County will challenge Hampton at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Ashe County, they will square off against Alexander Central at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Huskies will need to watch out since the Cougars have now posted at least 55 points every time they've taken the court this season.
