Football Preview: University Wildcats vs. Venice Gondoliers
University is 0-8 against Venice since November of 2015 but things could change on Friday. After each having a week off, the two teams will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field against one another at 7:30 p.m. University is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt wants to keep things rolling.
University is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They really took it to Los Angeles for the full four quarters, racking up a 48-6 win. With the Wildcats ahead 41-0 at the half, the game was all but over already.
University got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Montae Hamblet out in front who picked up 79 receiving yards and one TD, and also rushed for 30 yards and one touchdown. Hamblet really caught the secondary sleeping when he pulled down a catch that went for 79 yards. Another passer making a difference was Jeremy Pacheco, who threw for 125 yards and a pair of TDs on only eight passes.
University didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of William Biddle and Sylvian Lyons. Another thorn in Los Angeles' side was Kain Reyes, who picked up two sacks, forced one fumble, and made five total tackles.
Special teams played a big role in the game for University, adding 11 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Tareq Abdul, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown.
Meanwhile, Venice suffered their biggest defeat since September 27, 2024 two weeks ago. They had to suffer through a 41-6 loss at the hands of Westlake. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Gondoliers' biggest loss of the season was also their lowest-scoring.
University's win bumped their record up to 5-0. As for Venice, they now have a losing record of 2-3.
