Mater Dei Catholic and Otay Ranch are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2021, but likely not for long. The Crusaders will welcome the Mustangs at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Otay Ranch got the win against Eastlake on Wednesday by a conclusive 9-2. The win continues a trend for the Mustangs in their matchups with the Titans: they've now won three in a row.
Zoey Gonzales made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
In other pitching news, Otay Ranch got a great performance from Scarlett Martinez as she tossed five innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits.
Back at the plate, Ariele Torres was incredible, going a perfect 2-for-2 with five RBI and one double. That's the most hits she has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaylin Phillips, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run.
Otay Ranch was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .393. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Eastlake only posted a batting average of .231.
Mater Dei Catholic's defeat dropped their record down to 20-7. As for Otay Ranch, their victory bumped their record up to 13-10-1.
Friday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Mater Dei Catholic hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .344. However, it's not like Otay Ranch struggles in that department as they've averaged .314. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
