Merkel was sadly handed a defeat on Tuesday, but Lilly Nichols did her best to prevent it. Nichols produced her best game of the campaign: she struck out seven batters over 9.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off seven hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.
