Basketball Preview: Great Mills Hornets vs. Westlake Wolverines

Great Mills and the Wolverines are an even 4-4 against one another since January of 2015, but not for long. The Great Mills Hornets will be playing in front of their home fans against the Westlake Wolverines at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Great Mills is coming into the match hot, having won their last five games.

Winning is just a little bit easier when you make six more threes than your opponent, a fact Great Mills proved on Friday. They walked away with a 39-27 victory over Patuxent. Given Great Mills' advantage in MaxPreps' Maryland basketball rankings (they are ranked 114th, while the Panthers are ranked 245th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

It was another big night for A'naija Bush, who scored 17 points along with eight steals and six rebounds. She hasn't dropped below two blocks for eight straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Telisa Adams, who scored seven points along with ten rebounds and three steals.

Meanwhile, Westlake was beaten by the Raiders 61-16 on Monday. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest points Westlake has scored all season.

Great Mills' victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 12-5. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 50.3 points per game. As for Westlake, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-8 record this season.

Great Mills strolled past the Wolverines in their previous matchup back in January of 2023 by a score of 52-34. Will Great Mills repeat their success, or do the Wolverines have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
