Preview: Chatham Cavaliers vs. Gretna Hawks
Chatham is 1-8 against Gretna since September of 2014 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Chatham Cavaliers will head out on the road to face off against the Gretna Hawks at 7:00 p.m. Both teams come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
You can't lose the matchup if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Chatham's strategy against Dan River on Friday. Chatham was the clear victor by a 42-18 margin over Dan River. The match was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point Chatham had established a 23 point advantage.
Meanwhile, Gretna put the finishing touches on their third blowout victory of the season on Friday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Nelson County 55-7 on the road. Given Gretna's advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia football rankings (they are ranked 106th, while Nelson County is ranked 294th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Melvin Wooden, who threw for 163 yards and four touchdowns while completing 73.3% of his passes. Hayden Moon and his 93 yards on the ground were also a key factor in Gretna's win.
Chatham's victory bumped their record up to 6-2. As for Gretna, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 6-2.
Chatham couldn't quite finish off Gretna when the teams last played back in September of 2022 and fell 19-17. Can Chatham avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
