Recap: Vestaburg Wolverines vs. St. Charles Bulldogs

If the Vestaburg Wolverines were feeling good off their 40-15 takedown of the Carson City-Crystal Eagles last Wednesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Vestaburg was outmatched by St. Charles at home and fell 63-27. Vestaburg has struggled against St. Charles recently, as their match on Friday was their eighth consecutive lost matchup.

Vestaburg's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Lily Johnston, who scored 11 points along with five rebounds and two steals, and Ashlyn Mortensen who scored four points along with six rebounds. That was a full 40.7% of Vestaburg's points, marking the fifth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.

Vestaburg struggled to work together and finished the game with only four assists. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as St. Charles racked up 21 assists.

Leading St. Charles to victory were Emily Zelinko and Allison Zelinko. Zelinko scored 14 points along with six steals, while Zelinko dropped a double-double on 17 points and 11 rebounds. Zelinko is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Jenna Trevillian, who scored eight points.

Vestaburg has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost five of their last six games, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-7 record this season. As for St. Charles, the victory was the tenth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 10-1.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Vestaburg will play host again and welcome Ashley, where tip off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Ashley focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 33 on Friday. As for St. Charles, they will look to defend their home court on Wednesday against Breckenridge at 7:00 p.m. Breckenridge is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune.
