Softball Game Preview: Jones Eagles vs. Maine South Hawks

The Jones Eagles will square off against the Maine South Hawks at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Jones is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 19 runs last Friday, they were much more limited against Northside on Tuesday. They came up short against the Mustangs, falling 7-0. Considering the last time the Eagles couldn't score was back in April, the team can't take the result too hard.

Maine South came out on top against Addison Trail on Saturday thanks in part to the team's impressive four-run seventh inning. The Hawks took their matchup against the Blazers 6-3.

Sibelle Stevens spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned runs on ten hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks any time she's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, Aribella Spandiary was incredible, going 2-for-3 with one home run and four RBI. That's the most hits she has posted since back in April. Aubrey Mazza was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one home run and two runs.

They weren't the only ones working in the home run department: Maine South lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. They are 4-2 when they post two or more home runs.

Maine South's record is now 9-10. As for Jones, their defeat dropped their record down to 17-5-1.

Wednesday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Jones hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .426. However, it's not like Maine South struggles in that department as they've averaged .332. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.

Jones suffered a grim 10-0 defeat to Maine South in their previous matchup back in May of 2023. Can the Eagles avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
