Softball Game Preview: Cyprus Pirates vs. Kearns Cougars

Cyprus is a perfect 10-0 against Kearns since April of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. Cyprus will challenge Kearns at 3:30 p.m. Cyprus will be strutting in after a victory while Kearns will be coming in after a defeat.

While Cyprus' win against Hunter wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. Cyprus had just enough and edged out Hunter 2-0. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Pirates have posted against the Wolverines since April 27, 2021.

Not much got past Breelyn ( Bree ) Garcia, who gave up just four hits and racked up 13 Ks to keep Hunter off the board. Those 13 strikeouts gave Garcia a new career-high.

At the plate, Cyprus' win was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Adelaide ( Addie ) Winn, who went 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Meanwhile, Kearns came up short against Granger on Thursday and fell 10-6.

Maliyah Solomon made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs while going 3-for-4. Gardenia Kaumavae also deserves some recognition as she got her first hit of the season.

Even though they lost, Kearns kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. This was only their first loss (out of three games) when they post 11 or more hits.

The victory (which was Cyprus' third in a row) raised their record to 8-5. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Kearns, their loss was their 11th straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 4-7.

Everything went Cyprus' way against Kearns in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, as Cyprus made off with a 16-2 victory. Will Cyprus repeat their success, or does Kearns has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
