Basketball Recap: Whiteville Beats Pender for Their Third Straight Win

Whiteville had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 13 points) and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Pender Patriots, sneaking past 63-61. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 47-44 back in January.

Whiteville's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Marlon Herring, who posted 11 points and six boards. Herring has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last three times he's played. Rudy Jernigan was another key player, putting up 12 points and five rebounds.

Whiteville smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in four consecutive matches.

Several Patriots players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Jordan Hansley, who had 15 points. Another player making a difference was Ricky Armstrong, who earned nine points along with eight boards and three steals.

Whiteville's win bumped their record up to 13-7. As for Pender, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four contests, which has put a noticeable dent in their 5-10 record this season.

Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing East Bladen the next time they take the court. Pender will host East Bladen at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, while Whiteville will host them at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
