Football Recap: Columbus Starts Season with Win Against Miller County

Columbus gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Thursday. They took down the Miller County Pirates 35-17. For the Blue Devils, this counts as revenge for the 38-9 win the Pirates walked away with the last time they faced one another back in August of 2024.

Michael Fox was the offensive standout of the matchup as he rushed for 70 yards and one TD on only nine carries. That's the most rushing yards he has posted since back in August of 2024. Gavin Brown made the highlight reel by snagging an interception and taking it all the way to the house.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Columbus was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 249 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 151 rushing yards in four consecutive contests dating back to last season.

Columbus didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Woodruff Holland and Brown. Holland has been hot recently, having also posted five or more total tackles the last three times he's played. Brown got in on the action too, converting a pick into a touchdown.

Coming up, Columbus will square off against Greenville at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Miller County, they will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Clinch County at 7:30 p.m. on the 29th.
