The Eagle Pass Eagles will square off against the Central Catholic Buttons at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average, (Eagle Pass 3.4, Central Catholic 3.2) so any runs scored will be well earned.
While Eagle Pass' victory against Medina Valley wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. Eagle Pass came out on top in a nail-biter against Medina Valley on Friday, sneaking past 5-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Eagles have posted since February 28th.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Central Catholic). They were the clear victor by a 13-5 margin over Alexander on Wednesday. The Buttons not only won on Wednesday, but they posted their biggest win since May 1, 2024.
JD Amescua was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in strikeouts (four). He was even better at the plate, scoring a run while going 3-for-3. He also hit a double, marking his first of the season.
In other pitching news, Landon Holloway looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits.
Back at the plate, Central Catholic got a big performance out of Luke Ramos, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-4. That's the most runs Ramos has posted over his last seven matches. The team also got some help courtesy of Chase Fox, who scored a run while getting on base in all three of his plate appearances.
Central Catholic always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .564. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive contests.
Central Catholic pushed their record up to 11-4-1 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Eagle Pass, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 10-6-1.
Eagle Pass beat Central Catholic 9-6 when the teams last played back in March of 2024. Will Eagle Pass repeat their success, or does Central Catholic have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
