High school baseball: Sawyer Bonin of Texas tops national batting average leaderboard at .840

Future Houston Cougar has 42 hits in 50 at-bats with 28 extra-base hits.

Sawyer Bonin of Good Samaritan HomeSchool (Fred, Texas) leads high school baseball nationally with an .840 batting average according to statistics submitted to MaxPreps. The senior will play at the college level for Houston and has 28 extra-base hits this season. In an 8-5 win on March 31, Bonin had three hits and struck out 20 on the mound for the 17-3 Hornets.

Keanu Laweka of Zuni (N.M.) is second in the country with a .787 batting average. The junior has at least one hit in every game this season and he hit .810 in the month of April for the Thunderbirds. Teammate Kole Eriacho is eighth on the leaderboard with a .681 clip.

Sophomore Matthew Borde of Mesilla Valley Christian School (Las Cruces, N.M.) comes in at fifth with a .714 batting average. He has recorded at least three hits in half of his team's 14 games.
