Baseball Recap: Winfield Comes Up Short

Winfield had lost four straight at home, but on Thursday they dropped down to 2-15 to make it five. They came up short against the Augusta Orioles, falling 18-2. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Orioles this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 7-3 on Thursday.

As for Augusta, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-6 record this season. Considering they have won six games by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

For Augusta's part, John Carrell looked comfortable as he pitched four innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off three hits. What's more, Carrell posted four strikeouts, the most he's had since back in March.

At the plate, Augusta let Kaleb Hulse and Jett Santoya run wild. Hulse went a perfect 3-for-3 with six RBI, three doubles, and one stolen base, while Santoya got on base in all four of his plate appearances with four runs, four RBI, and one stolen base. What's more, Santoya posted two hits, the most he's had since back in March. Cade Camac was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with four runs, one stolen base, and one double.

Winfield wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next matchup, an 8-3 win against El Dorado on the 27th. As for Augusta, they have also already played their next contest, a 5-1 victory against Rose Hill on the 27th.
