Bears claim top spot after beating Saguaro in Open Division state championship game.

The high school football season in Arizona came to a close over the weekend with large school champions crowned at Sun Devil Stadium. Basha (Chandler) was among the victors, beating Saguaro (Scottsdale) 28-21 in the Open Division title game. That victory helped propel the Bears to the No. 1 ranking in the final state MaxPreps Top 25.

Basha won its first title at any level, ending a six-year run by perennial powers Chandler and Saguaro as champs in the state's highest classification. The Bears are 21-2 over the past two seasons under head coach Chris McDonald.

No. 6 Highland (Gilbert) repeated as 6A champion, beating Pinnacle (Phoenix) 37-26 in the state final. After a 3-7 season in 2016, head coach Broc Farrell took over in 2017 and has led the program to six straight playoff appearances and a record of 55-21.
