Recap: Johnson Atomsmashers vs. Savannah Country Day Hornets
The Johnson Atomsmashers were the 63-39 winner over the Savannah Country Day Hornets when they last played one another back in December of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. Johnson took a 62-54 hit to the loss column at the hands of Savannah Country Day on Saturday. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Johnson came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 132nd, while Savannah Country Day is ranked 266th).
Johnson's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Joshua Quarterman, who scored 21 points along with three steals. Quarterman has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last four times he's played. Favion Kirkwood was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 16 points and ten rebounds.
This is the second loss in a row for Johnson and nudges their season record down to 10-8. As for Savannah Country Day, their win bumped their record up to 6-11.
Johnson will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Savannah Christian at 7:30 p.m. As for Savannah Country Day, Savannah Country Day and Groves will face off at 7:30 p.m. on January 23rd without much rest after finishing up games yesterday. Groves knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past six games -- so hopefully Savannah Country Day likes a good challenge.
