Christ the King is our pick as the top girls basketball team in New York this season. Also watch out for Nazareth, Bergtraum, Long Island Lutheran and Penfield.

Christ the King enters the season with extremely high expectations - the norm for the Knights.

1. Christ the King (Middle Village)
2012-13 record: 19-9
Head coach: Bob Mackey

Duke-bound guard Sierra Calhoun – little sister of UConn’s Omar Calhoun – will be flanked by transfer guard Sydney Zambrotta (5-7, soph.) and tweeners Kollyns Scarbrough (5-11, sr.), Dominique Toussaint (5-10, soph.) and Shannon Barrett (5-10, sr.), who all handle the ball better than players built much closer to the ground.

2. Nazareth (Brooklyn)
2012-13 record: 16-11
Head coaches: Ronald Kelley and Thomas Davis

Bianca Cuevas (5-8, sr.), as good as any New York guard when she’s fully focused, and Yazmine Belk (6-2, sr.) will carry the load while sophomores Shalix Hines (5-4) and Niya Johnson (5-8) continue to develop into the next generation of coveted Division I prospects.

3. Bergtraum (New York City)
2012-13 record: 25-3
Head coach: Ed Grezinsky

Aaliyah Jones (5-8, sr.), the state sportswriters’ reigning Class AA player of the year, has transferred in after leading Bishop Ford to the Federation Class crown last March and surprised some by committing to Fordham over Big East suitors. With Joella Gibson, Ashanae Mclaughlin and Alexandria Smith back, a 16th-straight PSAL crown is within reach.

4. Long Island Lutheran (Brookville)
2012-13 record: 20-4
Head coach: Rich Slater

Lauren "Boogie" Brozoski (5-6, jr.) already has her ride to Michigan lined up. What she lacks in size, she more than makes up for with charisma and the ability to break down defenders off the dribble in any number of ways and attract slides. That’s going to leave Seton Hall commit Taylor Byrne (6-2, jr.) one-on-one in the paint way too often.

5. Penfield
2012-13 record: 17-4
Head coach: Mark Vogt

In a state where topping 150 NYSPHSAA Class AA schools is sometimes easier than finishing third in the CHSAA’s Brooklyn/Queens division, the Patriots are the leading candidate to cut down the net in Troy in March. Siena recruit Margot Hetzke (5-11, sr.) and shooting guard Lucy Covley are the only returning starters, but the program’s depth has been a recent trademark.
