Basketball Recap: Groesbeck Comes Up Short

Groesbeck lost to Elkhart back in December of 2025 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Thursday. The Goats fell 45-40 to the Elks. While losing is never fun, the Goats can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1024th, while the Elks are ranked 501st).

Despite the loss, Groesbeck still got an impressive performance from Ma'Kya Wells, who posted 14 points in addition to eight steals and five rebounds. Wells has been hot for a while, having posted four or more steals the last 12 times she's played. Another player making a difference was Emily Rodriguez, who earned three points along with 12 boards and five blocks.

Shunydeya Whitehead had another great game (as she tends to do), dropping a double-double with 26 points and 20 rebounds for Elkhart. That makes it 14 consecutive games in which Whitehead has scored at least a third of the Elks' points.

Groesbeck has been struggling recently as they've lost six of their last seven games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 11-18 record this season. As for Elkhart, with the victory, they broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 21-8.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming contests. Groesbeck will take on Fairfield at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Goats' defense better be ready for this one: the Eagles have averaged an impressive 57.8 points per game this season. As for Elkhart, they will challenge Mexia at 6:15 p.m. on the 30th.
