Basketball Recap: Ware Shoals Takes a Loss

If Ware Shoals was riding high fresh off their 59-16 takedown of South Carolina School for the Deaf & Blind last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Ware Shoals Hornets were outmatched by the Abbeville Panthers and fell 80-52. While losing is never fun, the Hornets can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 243rd, while the Panthers are ranked 105th).

Despite the loss, Ware Shoals still got an impressive performance from Jayce Medlin, who posted 18 points in addition to eight rebounds and three steals. Charles Callaham was another key player, putting up nine points and four steals.

Abbeville's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Jaylen Baylor led the charge by dropping a double-double on 14 points and 16 boards. With that strong performance, Baylor is now averaging an impressive 8.2 rebounds per game. Another player making a difference was Darius Riley, who went 6 of 8 en route to 14 points and seven assists.

Ware Shoals now has a losing record at 8-9. As for Abbeville, the victory was the sixth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 8-2.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Ware Shoals will welcome GREEN Upstate at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Ware Shoals is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 56 points per game this season. As for Abbeville, they will host McCormick at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Abbeville's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points every time they've taken the court this season.
