Basketball Game Preview: Lapeer Lightning vs. Powers Catholic Chargers

The Lapeer Lightning will square off against the Powers Catholic Chargers at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

Last Tuesday, Lapeer ended up a good deal behind Heritage and lost 60-45. While losing is never fun, the Lightning can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Michigan basketball rankings (they are ranked 340th, while the Hawks are ranked 84th).

Meanwhile, you can't lose the game if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Powers Catholic's strategy against Dow on Wednesday. Powers Catholic blew past Dow 75-50. Powers Catholic has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won eight matches by 23 points or more this season.

Powers Catholic had a senior duo take command as Javontae Ross went 10-for-15 en route to 25 points in addition to eight assists and six rebounds and Jesse Cull went 8-for-17 to rack up 19 points. The contest was Ross' third in a row with at least 19 points. Danny Wolak was another key player, putting up seven points and five boards.

Powers Catholic was working as a unit and finished the game with 22 assists. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now racked up at least 21 assists in five consecutive games.

Lapeer has been struggling recently as they've lost eight of their last ten matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 8-13 record this season. Powers Catholic's victory bumped their record up to 18-2.
