Basketball Game Preview: South Cougars vs. Maize South Mavericks

The South Cougars are taking a road trip to face off against the Maize South Mavericks at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. South is coming into the match on a three-game losing streak.

Last Tuesday, South came up short against Maize and fell 56-43. The game marked the Cougars' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

South's defeat came about despite a quality game from Gavin Devoe, who went 7 of 12 en route to 16 points and five rebounds. Those 16 points gave Devoe a new career-high.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Maize South). They breezed by Goddard to the tune of 65-35 on Tuesday. The victory was some much needed relief for the Mavericks as it spelled an end to their five-game losing streak.

Maize South's win bumped their record up to 2-5. As for South, their loss dropped their record down to an identical 2-5.

South might still be hurting after the 76-53 defeat they got from Maize South when the teams last played back in February of 2024. Thankfully for South, Jeron Askren (who dropped a double-double on 22 points and ten boards) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
