Baseball Recap: Granite Falls Has No Trouble Against Sultan

Granite Falls barely beat Sultan the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Tigers blew past the Turks 16-8 on Saturday. The result was nothing new for the Tigers, who have now won five matches by eight runs or more so far this season.

Drake Smith and Dwayne Pocknett Jr. did most of the damage at the plate: Smith went a perfect 4-for-4 with five RBI, one triple, and one stolen base, while Pocknett Jr. got on base in five of his six plate appearances with three stolen bases, four runs, and one RBI. That triple was Smith's first of the season. Another player making a difference was Jacob Morrison, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.

Granite Falls always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .682. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive contests.

Granite Falls' victory was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-6 and their overall record up to 8-8. As for Sultan, their defeat was their fifth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 4-10.

Looking ahead, Granite Falls will face off against South Whidbey at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Tigers are facing the Falcons at the right time seeing as the Falcons are stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Sultan, they will challenge Blaine at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. The Borderites' pitching crew has only allowed 3.2 runs per game this season, so the Turks' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
