Volleyball Recap: Cypress Bay Falls Short Against Ranked Varela

Cypress Bay faced Varela in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. Cypress Bay took a 3-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of Varela.

The loss didn't mean the game wasn't competitive: Varela scored at least 18 points in every set. The match finished with set scores of 25-22, 25-27, 25-22, 25-18.

Cypress Bay lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Diego Badia, who had 19 digs. Those 19 digs gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Alejandro Navarro, who had 20 assists and five digs.

Leading Varela to victory were Sebastian Hidalgo and Jose Santos. Hidalgo had 23 digs and three aces, while Santos had five digs and two aces. Santos is also on a roll when it comes to assists, as he's now posted 22 or more in each of the last six games he's played.

Cypress Bay's defeat dropped their record down to 6-3. As for Varela, the victory keeps they at an undefeated 8-0.

Cypress Bay wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next match, a 3-1 win against Pembroke Pines Charter on the 20th. As for Varela, they will be taking part in a tournament against Southwest at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
