Soccer Game Preview: Woodson vs. West Springfield

The Woodson Cavaliers will head out to challenge the West Springfield Spartans at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday. Both teams beat their previous opponents by a single goal, so this matchup might be just as contested.

Woodson proved they can win big two weeks ago (they won by five) and on Tuesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They beat South County by a goal, winning 3-2.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask West Springfield). They won by a goal and slipped past Alexandria City 3-2. The victory was all the more spectacular given West Springfield's disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia soccer rankings (they are ranked 108th, while Alexandria City are ranked eighth).

Woodson is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-2-2 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they scored 14 goals over those four matchups. As for West Springfield, their victory bumped their record up to 7-1.

Woodson skirted past West Springfield 2-1 when the teams last played back in April of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Cavaliers since the squad won't have the home-pitch advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
