Baseball Recap: Decatur Central's Winning Streak Snapped at Four Games

Decatur Central dropped their record down to 12-8 on Saturday, which also ended the team's four-game streak of wins. They took a 5-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Roncalli Royals. If the Hawks were looking for revenge after losing 10-0 to the Royals when the teams met back in May of 2016, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Jaylan Yates made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and one run. Brayden 'Beez' Cravens was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one double.

As for Roncalli, the victory was the seventh in a row for them, bringing their record up to 17-3. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.9 runs over those games.

On Roncalli's side, Jaiden Kuria spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on four hits and racked up eight Ks. Kuria has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Roncalli let Gio Ardizone and Drew Nelson run wild. Ardizone went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run, while Nelson went 1-for-2 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. That's the most stolen bases Ardizone has posted since back in April. Another player making a difference was Maddux Hayworth, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

Decatur Central and Roncalli should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Indiana Rankings. The Hawks will take on Martinsville at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank advantage (97 vs. 314). Meanwhile, Roncalli (ranked sixth) will meet Guerin Catholic (ranked 73rd) at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
