Baseball Recap: Wood River Gets the Win

While Wood River's win against Jerome wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Wolverines won by a run and slipped past the Tigers 7-6. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Wolverines have posted since May 2, 2024.

Ozzie Scherer made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out seven batters over 5.2 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off six hits (and only one walk). He also tossed a walk, which is notable because Wood River is 4-1 when he allows at most two walks, but 4-5 otherwise. Scherer was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.

In other batting news, Alex Golub was excellent, scoring a run and stealing two bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Wood River is undefeated when Golub posts two or more stolen bases, but 4-6 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Sully Carter, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3.

Wood River's win was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-4 and their overall record up to 8-6. As for Jerome, their defeat was their fourth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 7-10.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Wood River beat the Tigers by a score of 14-4 later that day.
