League recap: Holy Cross tops Brother Martin to extend winning streak

Adding to the longest winning streak in 5A District 9 this week, Holy Cross beat Brother Martin 28-21. The victory was the seventh in a row for the Tigers.

The Crusaders took down New Orleans Home School Saints 22-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.

Holy Cross' offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. James Tabary threw for 283 and 3 touchdowns and Michael Chigbu had 137 yards receiving. On the ground Todd Spriggins contributed 62 yards. Jerry Cook helped Holy Cross' passing attack out by catching 6 balls for 70 yards.

He went 17-25 with 0 interceptions.

Tabary put up the best numbers through the air as Barry Wilson's team defeated Brother Martin. Tabary's favorite target this week was Chigbu, who caught 7 passes for 137 yards.

Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, the Tigers' Tabary and Chigbu have proven to be a lethal combination. 6-1 quarterback Tabary has thrown for 1,292 yards this season, while Chigbu has 34 catches for 653 yards. St. Augustine's Leonard Fournette leads the league in rushing yards with 759.

The marquee game in the league this week will be the clash between Holy Cross and the Purple Knights. The Tigers enters the contest ranked 11th in the state, while St. Augustine ranks second.

Cyrus Crutchfield's team led 5A District 9 in scoring this week by notching 35 points on Archbishop Rummel.
