The Northern York Polar Bears will take on the Hempfield Black Knights at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. Northern York is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.2 runs per game this season.
Northern York will bounce into Thursday's game after beating West Perry, who they had gone 2-7 against in their nine prior meetings. The Polar Bears were the clear victors by a 14-6 margin over the Mustangs on Wednesday. The home team had taken home the W every time these teams have met since May 3, 2018, but that streak is no more.
Izzy Hobby and Hannah Keith did most of the damage at the plate: Hobby got on base in all six of her plate appearances with one home run, three stolen bases, and three runs, while Keith went 3-for-5 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Sammy Magee, who scored two runs while going 3-for-5.
Northern York hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least four batters in five consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, after soaring to 17 runs the game before, Hempfield was a bit more limited in their contest on Wednesday. They came up short against Penn Manor, falling 9-2.
Lily Ashton was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.
Northern York pushed their record up to 7-1 with the victory, which was their tenth straight on the road dating back to last season. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.1 runs on average over those games. As for Hempfield, their loss was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 5-4.
Northern York's speedy runners might be the difference in Thursday's game. The Polar Bears have been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.6 stolen bases per game. It's a different story for Hempfield, though, as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.8 stolen bases. Will they be able to secure the bases, or will Northern York continue to outrun the ball? Check MaxPreps after the action for a full breakdown of the game and more softball content.
