The St. John's Mavericks will face off against the First Baptist Christian Warriors at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this game.
Things were looking good for St. John's after they put the first points on the board on Monday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They fell just short of Mission Vista by a score of 6-5. The Mavericks have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Melanie Chen was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over six innings while giving up four earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits (and only one walk). That's the fewest earned runs she has allowed since back in March of 2024. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one RBI. That triple was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Gabby Sherrill was cooking despite her team's loss, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one triple, one run, and one double. That triple marked the first that she hit this season.
Meanwhile, First Baptist Christian was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their sixth straight loss. They came up short against White, falling 16-4.
Maddie McBride and Theresa Antimo stepped up to the plate in a big way. McBride scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2, while Antimo scored a run and stole Three bases. while going 1-for-2. The dominant performance gave Antimo a new career-high in stolen bases. The team also got some help courtesy of Abi Gardner, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Even though they lost, First Baptist Christian was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .471. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their batting average total in four consecutive contests.
St. John's defeat dropped their record down to 5-3-1. As for First Baptist Christian, their loss dropped their record down to 1-9.
St. John's took their win against First Baptist Christian in their previous matchup two weeks ago by a conclusive 16-1. Will St. John's repeat their success, or does First Baptist Christian have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
