Mt. Carmel is 8-2 against Westview since March of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Sundevils will square off against the Wolverines at 4:00 p.m. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Mt. Carmel comes in on eight and Westview on four.
Mt. Carmel barely beat Ramona the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Sundevils blew past the Bulldogs 18-1 on Wednesday. With that victory, the Sundevils brought their scoring average up to 6.1 runs per game.
Clara Carter was incredible, going 1-for-2 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaili Martha, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
Mt. Carmel always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .784. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Westview made easy work of Valley Center on Wednesday and carried off a 15-1 win. Considering the Wolverines have won 11 contests by more than five runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.
Kaya Rodriguez looked comfortable as she pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in 13 consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Sarah Deng and Taylor Thomas did most of the damage at the plate: Deng went 1-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs, while Thomas got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one triple. Those four RBI gave Deng a new career-high. Kamilla Taraila was another key player, going 2-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.
Mt. Carmel pushed their record up to 15-9 with the victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.7 runs over those games. As for Westview, their record is now 16-8-1.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Friday. Mt. Carmel hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.4 home runs per game. However, it's not like Westview struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.5 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Mt. Carmel skirted past Westview 2-1 in their previous meeting two weeks ago. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Sundevils since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
