Volleyball Recap: Widefield Takes a Loss

If Widefield was riding high fresh off their 3-0 takedown of Harrison on Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Gladiators took a 3-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Canon City Tigers on Thursday. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Tigers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 3-0 back in September.

Widefield started the match hot and won the first set, but they struggled down the stretch and lost the last three. The match finished with set scores of 20-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-13.

Their offense was headlined by Karolina Olivarria and Katie Walderon, who picked up eight kills apiece. They got some help from Leila Brown and her 18 assists. Finally, Jaileen Martinez kept Widefield's defense grounded, leading the team with three blocks.

Canon City was led to victory by Raegen John and Caitlyn West. John had 22 digs and seven aces, while West had 14 digs and 11 assists. With that strong performance, John is now averaging an impressive 2 aces per game.

Widefield has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost five of their last six contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 12-8 record this season. As for Canon City, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 15-5.

Widefield has already played their next match, a 3-0 defeat against Coronado on the 21st. As for Canon City, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 3-0 victory against Harrison on the 21st.
