Top 50 longest winning streaks in high school football history

De La Salle's 151-game mark stands above all others.

All campuses were founded prior to 1800.

When De La Salle (Concord, Calif.) surpassed Hudson (Mich.) with its 73rd consecutive win in 1997, the Spartans were still a long way from actually holding the national record for longest unbeaten streak.

While the National Federation of High Schools record book recognized Hudson as the record holder for consecutive wins, two schools actually held longer unbeaten streaks than the Michigan school. Sims (Union County, S.C.) set a 96-game unbeaten streak between 1945 and 1954 while Bedford County Training School (Shelbyville, Tenn.) went 82 games without a loss between 1943 and 1950.

One reason the streaks held by Sims and Bedford County Training School are not included in the national record book is they occurred at all-black schools during the segregated South. Accomplishments of all-black schools were poorly chronicled in most newspapers, if they were reported at all.

However, Sims coach James Moorer was inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in 1975 and is credited with a 96-game unbeaten streak, which included 92 wins and four ties. For his career, Moorer had a 130-10-9 record. It's unknown how many consecutive wins Sims actually had.

Likewise, Bedford County Training School's consecutive win total is unclear. When it lost on Nov. 5, 1950, the story said the Tigers had won 78 game in a row. However in his book "Field of Dreamers," Gene Pearce has Bedford County's record for that stretch as 78-0-4.

Also during the streak, Bedford County had 32 straight shutouts. For many years, the Tigers were credited in the NFHS record book with 52 consecutive shutouts, however an article in the Kingsport Times in 1945 noted that Bedford County had allowed two touchdowns against Holloway, ending a streak of 32 shutouts.

De La Salle went on to pass both Bedford County Training School and Sims on the unbeaten list and more than doubled Hudson's mark by finishing with 151 consecutive wins before finally losing to Bellevue (Wash.) in the 2004 season opener. Independence (Charlotte, N.C.) also passed both Sims and Bedford County with 109 consecutive wins between 2000 and 2007.

Our list of the Top 50 win streaks is for wins only, no ties. We make only two exceptions — Sims and Bedford County Training School — because their exact consecutive win total is unknown.

As for known win streaks, the first streak close to 40 consecutive wins was by Oak Park (Ill.), which won 38 in a row from 1910-14. Tuscaloosa (Ala.) stretched the streak to 49 games in 1931. Verbena (Ala.) jumped the record up to 50 games in a row before Jefferson City (Mo.) put the record at 71 in a row in 1966. Hudson made it 72 in a row in 1975.

One team to watch in 2020 is Caledonia (Minn.), which is No. 15 all-time with 67 straight wins and counting.

The list below is a Top 50 list followed by a sequential listing of all teams with at least 40 or more wins.
