Basketball Recap: Monroe Beats Therrell for Their Fifth Straight Win

Monroe had already won four in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 17.3 points) and they went ahead and made it five on Saturday. They walked away with a 56-48 victory over the Therrell Panthers. Given the Golden Tornadoes' advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 95th, while the Panthers are ranked 253rd) , the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Monroe was led to victory by Brayden Burns and Tristan Terry. Burns shot 79% from the field on his way to 27 points, while Terry went 5-for-10 to rack up 14 points in addition to five assists and three steals. Terry is also on a roll when it comes to shooting accuracy, as he's posted one of at least 50% in the last ten games he's played dating back to last season. Another player making a difference was Kameron Jones, who posted seven points.

Therrell's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Gordon Davis, who shot 60% from beyond the arc en route to 19 points and five rebounds. Morion McWhorter was another key player, dropping a double-double with 15 points and 13 boards.

Monroe's record is now 7-2. As for Therrell, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-7.

Coming up, Monroe will be taking part in a tournament against Central at 7:00 p.m. on the 29th. The Rockets have been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games. As for Therrell, they will take on Seckinger in a tournament on Saturday. The Panthers will need to watch out since the Jaguars have now posted at least 55 points in their last three contests.
