Baseball Game Preview: Gilroy Mustangs vs. Ann Sobrato Bulldogs

The Gilroy Mustangs will take on the Ann Sobrato Bulldogs at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

Gilroy is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 14 runs on Thursday, they were much more limited against Piedmont Hills on Saturday. They came up short against the Pirates, falling 12-1. The Mustangs have struggled against the Pirates recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost meeting.

Meanwhile, Ann Sobrato had already won seven in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 6.6 runs) and they went ahead and made it eight on Saturday. They walked away with a 10-7 victory over the Panthers. While the Bulldogs didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

DJ Vallejo and Liam Bettencourt made a splash while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Vallejo pitched five innings while giving up three earned (and four unearned) runs off seven hits. Meanwhile, Bettencourt pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Vallejo has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one walk in six consecutive appearances. At the plate, Vallejo went 1-for-4 with one stolen base and one RBI, while Bettencourt got on base in four of his five plate appearances with one stolen base and one RBI.

In other batting news, Dylan Brown was incredible, going 2-for-5 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That's the most runs he has posted since back in February of 2024. Another player making a difference was Adam Alciatti, who scored a run while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

Ann Sobrato's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-2. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.5 runs on average over those games. As for Gilroy, they now have a losing record of 6-7.

Gilroy suffered a grim 18-0 defeat to Ann Sobrato when the teams last played back in February of 2024. Can Gilroy avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
