Softball Preview: Alameda Pirates vs. Wheat Ridge Farmers

Alameda hasn't had much luck against Wheat Ridge recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. The Alameda Pirates will host the Wheat Ridge Farmers at 10:00 a.m. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Alameda took a loss when they played away from home last Tuesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Tuesday. They came out on top against Englewood by a score of 7-4.

Andi Padilla was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing four bases while getting on base in two of her three plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Claire To, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2.

Alameda didn't let batters stay on the plate for long and finished the game with six strikeouts. That's the most strikeouts they've posted since was before the start of last season.

Meanwhile, Wheat Ridge won against Fountain-Fort Carson on Saturday with 16 runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Wednesday. Wheat Ridge put the hurt on Denver North with a sharp 16-6 win. The result was nothing new for the Farmers, who have now won four matchups by eight runs or more so far this season.

Haley Cross made a big impact no matter where she played. She tossed 4.2 innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk in four consecutive pitching appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two runs, a triple, and two RBI.

In other batting news, Evelyn Detwiler was incredible, going 3-for-3 with a home run, five RBI, and two runs. She also hit a double, marking her first of the season. Skarlette Arenas was another key player, scoring three runs while going 2-for-3.

The victory got Alameda back to even at 1-1. As for Wheat Ridge, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 4-2.
