Baseball Recap: Woodlands Comes Up Short

Woodlands extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to nine on Monday, dropping their season record down to 0-4 in the process. They lost 17-5 to the East Ramapo [Ramapo/Spring Valley] Titans. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Titans this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 24-8 on Saturday.

As for East Ramapo [Ramapo/Spring Valley], the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 8-3. Considering they have won seven matches by more than six runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.

For East Ramapo [Ramapo/Spring Valley]'s part, Jeremy Almonte was a major factor no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out 14 batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and three unearned) runs off four hits. Those 14 strikeouts gave Almonte a new career-high. He was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with five stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. He has become a key player for East Ramapo [Ramapo/Spring Valley]: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two stolen bases, but 2-3 otherwise.

In other batting news, Sadiel Rodriguez and Anthony Araque did most of the damage at the plate: Rodriguez went 1-for-5 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three runs, while Araque got on base in four of his five plate appearances with four stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Rodriguez is becoming a predictor of East Ramapo [Ramapo/Spring Valley]'s success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 0-3 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Josiah Daniel, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs and two RBI.

Woodlands does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for East Ramapo [Ramapo/Spring Valley], they will head out to challenge Yonkers Montessori Academy at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
