Volleyball Recap: Martinsville Gets the Win

The Martinsville Artesians beat the Decatur Central Hawks 3-1 on Thursday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Artesians.

The match was exciting from start to finish, as three sets needed extra rallies to gain a two-point lead. The match finished with set scores of 27-25, 25-27, 26-24, 25-10.

Owen Zurita paced Martinsville's offense, picking up 15 kills. Zurita got some help from Cameron Sylvester and his 25 assists. Eli Bennett controlled things from the service line, finishing with three aces.

Despite the defeat, Decatur Central saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Esteban Martinez had 21 digs and two assists. Those 21 digs set a new season-high mark for Martinez. Tait Owens also deserves some recognition as he had his first kills of the season.

Martinsville now has a winning record of 4-3. As for Decatur Central, they dropped their record down to 1-7 with the loss, which was their fourth straight on the road.

Looking ahead, Martinsville will square off against Lawrence North at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Decatur Central, they will welcome Pike at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
